Nyungwe Forest National Park Africa's last remaining mountain rainforest habitat. There are an array of amazing wonders within Rwanda that make it well worth the visit. First and foremost are the Mountain Gorillas found on the bamboo forested slopes of its peaks. Secondly their smaller cousins and our closest animal relatives, the Chimpanzees, found traipsing through the tree canopy of the Nyungwe Forest National Park Africa's last remaining mountain rainforest habitat. Then there are the amazing volcanoes with their green slopes and the dark waters of the lakes within their 'dormant' craters in the Volcanoes National Park. You might also be surprised to find a tropical beach environment on the shores of Lake Kivu.
Gorilla Special: short 4-day Tour
This is a short visit to Rwanda's Parc National des Volcans to see the gorillas. It makes a great add-on to a safari in Kenya or Tanzania, Like a gorgeous mural with all six of Rwanda’s volcanoes lined up in sequence, you will certainly delight in trekking through the chain of misty volcanoes while enjoying clean air and panoramic views as you trail the rare mountain gorillas. Occupying 125 sq km of montane forest, the park sits about 104 km from the capital city –Kigali. Trekking the forest and tracking the giant apes is an educative, entertaining, and refreshing experience!
Nyungwe rainforest is placed in the southwestern Rwanda, at the border with Burundi, south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Nyungwe forest has a wide diversity of animal species, making it a priority for conservation in Africa.
Chimpanzees if you are lucky enough to encounter them, you will spend a really enjoyable hour watching them leap from branches, build nests from leaves in the treetops, and play and groom each other.
Duration of the safari: 03 Days (02 Nights)
Accommodation: Gorilla Nest (Luxury) / Kinigi Guest House (Budget)
Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) lies in northwestern Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The national park is known as a haven for the mountain gorilla. It is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), which are covered in rainforest and bamboo.
Nyungwe Forest is at present the best typical place to track chimpanzees in Rwanda. The chimpanzee tracking and terrain is very difficult and you must be of a very good fitness in order to gain the most from this experience. The habituated black and white colobus troop is much easier to view along with a relaxing visit to the visitor centre and the orchid garden.
Akagera National Parc is located in the east of Rwanda. Kibungu is the city that is nearest to the park and the best starting point. The park has a variety of wildlife and is a habitat for over 500 different species of birds.
Akagera National Park is more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterize much of Rwanda. Dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile, this is archetypal African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland. Akagera is, above all, big game country! Herds of elephant and buffalo emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes, while lucky visitors might stumble across a leopard, a spotted hyena or even a stray lion.
